you will have to reach a little further to touch the long grass as it ascends in the summer sun

if you are grown
you will not have to stretch as tall to touch the low leaves as they sprawl

when you are grown
you will need to remember to walk on the very edge of the path
                         
              extending your longer arm
              opening your older hand

the feathered seeded heads of wild grass to pass through your hands

like the years of your child,
                                   silken wisps,
                                              tender on your skin,
                                                                      always within reach 

then they are grown
